There are a thousand things we’d rather do rather than homework or study. So we do them. Facebook, Youtube, Snapchat, tidy our sock drawer…
It’s a shame there are no career opportunities for a job that involves Facebooking with our friends for hours. There would be in a perfect world!
But the world is not perfect and it is a FOL (Fact Of Life) that whilst Facebook is a lot of fun, to spend a lot of time on there is not PRODUCTIVE. Of course we know this. And even though we know this, it doesn’t stop us from doing it!!
Simple mindset exercises to help curb social media addiction are:
- Trade off. Say to yourself, “I can go on Facebook for 15 minutes after I’ve done 30 minutes of homework”.
- Make a list of small tasks to complete like “Write introduction to essay” rather than “Write essay”. Breaking things into chunks makes large things seem more achievable and you can tick them off with a flourish as you go.
- Purchase an app that will turn your social media devices off after a certain amount of time.
- Give your phone to your parents and carers and ask them not to give it back to you until you’ve finished a certain amount of work.
- Do your homework in an area of the house where people are around so they can pull you up if you’re chatting online.
- Have the mantra of “Just do it”. Repeat this over and over. Talk yourself into doing it. Get your work done quickly and then you can play.
